GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas Kim Schoolcraft, the director of the county s animal shelter for 61/2 years, unexpectedly announced she is quitting.

Schoolcraft said her decision to step down next month was in response to the county health district s decision to hire a business manager for the Galveston County Animal Resource Center.

She accused the health district management of cronyism and hiring someone with no experience working in an animal shelter while someone who already had been filling the position just not with the title was a better choice for the job.

Health district managers deny Schoolcraft s allegation and said they hired the best person for the job and someone who would take on the business management of the recently expanded center.

During budget hearings the (city) partners that fund animal services approved an assistant manager position for the shelter, Schoolcraft said. The shelter already has an assistant manager (in) Gwen Norman without the title.

Last week, however, Ronnie Schultz, who is the health district s director of environmental health programs and who has oversight on the animal center s operations, announced that Siegfried Glover, who had been working in one of the health district s billing departments, would be the new business manager for the center.
