GALVESTON Park board trustees on Tuesday questioned how tourist-friendly a program for charging people to park along the seawall could be since it would include the use of license plate recognition software to identify vehicles linked to outstanding warrants.
We try to make every effort to make tourists feel welcome, board member Renee Adame said. Is this something that ll make people angry at Galveston?
Police Chief Henry Porretto said the software, which would mainly be used to verify drivers had paid the parking fee, would likely be unpopular at first but would also help identify stolen vehicles and missing persons.
It s going to be a challenge; there s no way around it, Porretto said. We hope to structure this to deal with any complaints. I agree with (Adame), but this is the quickest, most efficient way to collect money.
