AUSTIN -- University of Texas students plan to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon to show their response to a new federal immigration policy.
The policy allows two years of temporary relief from deportation for people who come to the United States before the age of 16. They must have lived in the U.S. for at least five years and must be either in school, graduates or military veterans. Immigrants must also be younger than 30 and cannot have acriminal record.
It costs $465 to apply for the policy. Officials say the money will be used to fund the immigration program and cover the costs of processing requests and background checks.
Thousands gathered in long lines in Houston Tuesday to get ID's and passports at the consulates of Mexico and El Salvador.
Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. UT students will meet at the Littlefield Fountain along 21st Street.
