HOUSTON One driver was killed Monday night after recklessly racing up an embankment off a southeast Houston freeway, according to Houston police.

Police said a man in a dark blue sedan and another one in a white car were speeding up the embankment in the northbound lanes of Highway 288 at MacGregor around 8:45 p.m.

One of the drivers lost control and ran into the foundation post of the freeway underpass.That driver then slammed into the other vehicle.

Both drivers were transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where one of them died.

The condition of the other driver was unknown.

The inbound side of the freeway was shut down for several hours until crews cleared the scene.
