AURORA, Colo. The grounds of a makeshift memorial near the theater where the mass shooting took place is home to 12 handmade crosses crafted by a man determined to honor the victims.

I paint them by hand, said Greg Zanis. I sand them down in between and kiss every one of my crosses after they dry.

Zanis drove overnight from his home in Aurora, Illinois to bring his moving tribute to the people of Colorado. He made a similar journey in 1999 following the Columbine massacre.

I put up 15 back then. Two for the shooters and then the other 13 for the victims, said Zanis.

He s hoping the crosses he erected on Sunday will be the last he ever has to make.
