PEARLAND, Texas Vandals gouged out the center of the football field at the Rig in Pearland, sparking disappointment from many in the community where high school football remains a huge attraction.

Officials said the vandals struck sometime overnight, between Monday and Tuesday. A soccer coach discovered the vandalism at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

School officials said the cost of repairs could run upwards of $25,000. Police are sifting through surveillance footage and checking Facebook and Twitter for clues.

Something like this doesn t happen in a vacuum, said Lt. Onesimo Lopez of the Pearland Police Department. Whoever did this is surely going to be talking to somebody. And we hope whoever they re talking to gives us a call.

The Rig is home to the Dawson High Eagles and the Pearland High Oilers.

Two years ago, the Oilers won the state title. The school district s athletic director remains confident the damage can be repaired by the start of football season.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Pearland Police Department at 281-997-4100.
