HOUSTON Texans safety Ed Reed has said multiple times that he hopes to be ready for the team s season opener at San Diego and it appears he s trying all options to do so.

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said on Tuesday that Reed has been working with an out of town rehab specialist to help recover from hip surgery over the offseason.

He s going to spend a couple of days with him, Kubiak said. We re going to do it this week and we re going to do it early next week, so that we re proceeding in the right direction in phases of his rehab.

Reed hasn t participated in any practices during Training Camp, mostly doing work on the side. Kubiak stressed that this move is not a sign of a setback.

No, absolutely not, Kubiak said. It s just something that we ve made our progress here for a couple of weeks.

Both Reed and the team have worked with this particular specialist in the past and the two sides feel that this is a necessary step in the veteran safety s recovery.

(Head Athletic Trainer Geoff Kaplan) been in contact with this guy. He s worked with us before, so we wanted him to go see him for a couple of days and basically make sure we re doing the right things, Kubiak said. We re going to do that for a couple of days each week.

Shiloh Keo started alongside Danieal Manning at safety during the Texans pre-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings last Friday.
