GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- The defense is set to begin in the trial of a man charged with killing a bystander near a Southeast Texas courthouse in gunfire that left his daughter and her mother wounded.

Jefferson County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for 42-year-old Bartholomew Granger of Houston. He s charged with capital murder in last year s slaying of Minnie Ray Sebolt, of Deweyville, outside a courthouse in downtown Beaumont.

Granger s lawyers deferred their opening statement when prosecutors began their case a week ago. The trial is resuming Monday in Galveston, where it s been moved so jurors wouldn t have to walk by the crime scene each day.

Prosecutors say an angry Granger planned the March 2012 shooting in retaliation for testimony against him at a sexual misconduct trial.
