HOUSTON -- The University of Houston s chancellor has agreed to higher wages for English department teaching fellows after they staged a sit-in outside her office.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Renu Khator committed $1 million a year Monday to roughly 70 teaching fellows, five days after they began their protest. The fellows are currently paid $9,600 to $11,200 a year to teach freshman composition classes. They haven t gotten a raise in 20 years.

Khator says in a letter to faculty and staff that she is sympathetic to the issues raised by the fellows.

She also agreed to a review of the university s English department.
