HOUSTON Tens of thousands of runners will be pounding the pavement Sunday during the Chevron Houston Marathon and half-marathon.

They take themulti-mile challenge for a variety of reasons, including fundraising.

KHOU 11 News Anchor Lisa Hernandez is running the half-marathon to raise money for Citizens for Animal Protection.

She visited CAP recently to meet some of the homeless dogs, cats and bunnies that will benefit from her 13-mile run.

She also met theNelson family. They were at CAP to adopt Cody, a 5-month-old playmate for the first puppy they adopted from CAP a few months ago.

I m just trying to give them a better life than most people do, saidJeffrey Nelson.

And that s what CAP is all about.

I think that so many people, when they adopt an animal from a shelter, they realize what they have done. They ve saved a life, and I think the animal knows it too, said Trisha Royal with Citizens for Animal Protection.

CAP has served the Greater Houston area since 1972 by providing shelter and medical care for homeless, neglected and abused animals.

So many animals are turned in by their owners because they didn t realize what they were getting into, Royal said.

In fact, more than half of all animals taken in at CAP are owner-surrenders.

On any given day, they care for about 300 dogs and cats.

The dogs are walked daily around a large outdoor track by employees and volunteers.

Anybody who wants to come out and walk a dog, anytime, sign up, Royal said. We ll put ya to work.

The cats have their own large room in the Katy Freeway facility with plenty of room and toys to keep them occupied.

With an average adoption rate of forty-seven percent, CAP has one of the highest rates in the state and three times the national average.

CAP also emphasizes humane education to promote responsible pet ownership and to prevent animal cruelty.

CAP is a non-profit that doesn t get any government or United Way funding. They depend on fundraisers and private donations to help provide the best care for their animals.

People like you are gonna be helping us. Running the half-marathon and fundraising for CAP... huge. It s so important and we really appreciate it.
