EL PASO, Texas -- A winter storm blanketed West Texas with as much as eight inches of snow on Thursday.

West Texas west of San Angelo and south of the Midland-Odessa area was under a winter storm warning throughout Thursday.

In the El Paso area, the National Weather Service reported up to 3 inches of snow fell by nightfall Thursday. Forecasters say 8 to 10 inches of snow was expected in the mountains.

Emergency crews struggled to keep up by sanding ice-coated roads.

People living near the mountains had to deal with especially hazardous conditions: strong gusts of wind and patches of ice on the road.

Motorists are bracing for dangerous black ice as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight.
