HOUSTON Firefighters extinguished heavy fire at a house in south Houston where flames ended a birthday party for an 80-year-old woman.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday, family members who were celebrating at the house on Brisbane and Buffum had plugged in a number of things including stereos and cooking apparatus and at some point the lights flickered and went out.

That s when smoke began coming out of the attic, according to witnesses.

Everything was just fine and then the house just started smoking. Everybody went in to get the kids off because the lights were off, said Lelia Jones, one of the people in the house.

HFD was able to make a fast attack and get the fire under control before it consumed the one-story home.
