LAKE HOUSTON, Texas A series of photographs snapped by birdwatchers may be the key to catching a couple of suspected poachers who allegedly shot a deer on a greenbelt trail near Lake Houston.

The photos show two men dressed in camouflage gear, one of whom looks directly at the camera.

The birdwatchers snapped the photos after hearing gunfire and seeing the two men. One of them carried a rifle. They later found the dead deer.

The incident happened in October, but the photographs have just become public.

A police officer working the case posted notices about it on social media sites frequented by hunters. After nobody stepped forward to identify the poachers, the officer contacted reporters in an attempt to crack the case.

Law enforcement officers say incidents like this are dangerous, but common.

The shooting happened along a wilderness trail frequented by people walking their dogs and by children strolling through the woods. Hunting is always illegal in the area because it s park land owned by the City of Houston.
