HOUSTON The Houston Texans have agreed to a contract with veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme, according to Delhomme s agent Rick Smith.

The Texans needed a third quarterback after Matt Leinart suffered a season-ending broken collarbone Sunday against Jacksonville. It was Leinart s first start since Matt Schaub was benched for the season by a foot injury.

Delhomme, 36, was released by the Cleveland Browns after playing four games last season.

He played for the Panthers in the 2005 Super Bowl. Over his career, Delhomme has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes with 125 touchdowns and 20,000 passing yards. He s thrown 101 interceptions.

Delhomme played college football for the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he was the all-time passing leader in yards and touchdowns.

Delhomme was among the quarterbacks who worked out for the Texans after Schaub s injury. The Texans also signed Kellen Clemens who is expected to back up rookie T.J. Yates.

The Texans are 8-3 and in first place in the AFC South.
