HOUSTON - Taylor McHargue threw for 201 yards and a touchdown, while former quarterback Taylor Cook caught five passes for 82 yards and a score to highlight the action as the Rice Owls closed out their 2011 spring drills with the annual Blue-Gray Spring Game on Saturday at Rice Stadium.

The Blue team, made up of the Owls offensive players, defeated the Gray squad consisting of the defensive players, 44-34.

In addition to touchdowns and field goals, points were also awarded on offense for explosive plays, while the defenders were awarded points for sacks, tackles for loss, three and outs, and holding the offense scoreless inside the red zone.

The Gray took an 11-1 lead after one quarter, but the Blue found their offensive footing in the second quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns to take a 20-15 lead at halftime.

Sophomore running back Jeremy Eddington showed the same home run flair that he exhibited in the latter stages of the 2010 season, bursting through the line for a 77-yard touchdown run early in the second for the game s first score. On the following series, McHargue found his former fellow quarterback Cook near the Gray goal line and the junior-to-be stretched his 6-7 frame across the goal line despite the efforts of linebacker Cameron Nwosu to score the game s second touchdown.

McHargue completed 13 of 22 passes on the day, and combined with Nick Fanuzzi, Michael Poynter and running back Sam McGuffie to combine for 251 yards through the air.

Eddington led all rushers, finishing with 82 yards on two carries. Senior Tyler Smith carried the ball 10 times for 37 yards and added the game s final touchdown with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. McGuffie rushed the ball three times for 13 yards, caught three passes for 69 more and completed a 19-yard pass to McHargue.

Sophomore Chris Boswell added a pair of 24-yard field goals for the Blue.

The Owls will now break from training to focus on upcoming finals. They will open training camp in early August to begin preparations for the 2011 season opener against Texas on September 3. The Owls 2011 home opener will be the following week when they welcome the Purdue Boilermakers to Rice Stadium on September 10.
