HOUSTON A Houston police officer charged with sexually assaulting one woman is suspected in at least four other attacks, according to prosecutors.
Abraham Joseph, 27,appeared in court on Tuesday where the judge refused to lower his $500,000 bond. Prosecutors said he s a flight risk because he has four passports, including one from India where he was born.
Defense attorney Nicole Deborde argued that Joseph is now an American citizen who has turned over his passports so he shouldn t be labeled a flight risk.
Deborde also said Joseph is not guilty.
He is innocent of these charges, she said. We will be entering pleas of not guilty.
The woman Joseph is accused of assaulting was a waitress at a southwest Houston nightclub. She said she was talking on her cell phone outside the club when Joseph handcuffed her and drove her away in his patrol car.
A restraining order petition filed against Joseph alleges he took the victim to a dark area and brutally assaulted her while she was still handcuffed.
The document said Joseph tried to use water to wash away the evidence after the attack. He later dumped the woman on the side of the road and drove away.
The woman walked back to work and immediately reported the alleged assault.
Josephfaces two counts of aggravated sexual asasult in that case.
He could face up to life in prison if convicted.
Joseph has been relieved of duty from HPD, as the investigation continues.
