HOUSTON Take that, Big Apple! When it comes to shopping, the Bayou City is tops, according to Forbes magazine.
Houston came in as No.1 on Forbes first-ever list of the top 25 shopping cities in the U.S.
Houston was joined in the rankings by four other Texas cities: Dallas is number 3, San Antonio is number 8, Austin is ranked number 12 and El Paso is 25th.
Not too shabby for the Lone Star State.
Ironically, New York didn t even make the top 10 -- it earned the 22nd spot on the list.
Forbes formula for the rankings included the interests of all types of shoppers not just the Rodeo Drive variety.
Forbes said they were looking for the cities with the best combination of options, ease and affordability.
They cited The Galleria, the biggest mall in Texas with over 2.5 million square feet of retail space, as one of Houston s highlights. Also mentioned were Houston s trendy boutiques places like 310 Rosemont.
We beat LA. We beat New York. We beat everyone especially Dallas. That s our main competitor in Texas as well, 310 Rosemont store manager Vanessa Sarne said.
Forbes looked at the number of total retail centers, the number of discount chains like Walmart, and the sales tax for each city, as well.
But perhaps most importantly, Bayou City shoppers themselves seemed to agree with Forbes rankings.
Sales are great right now, and everything s really convenient whether you want to go to the mall or stop in and shop over here at River Oaks, shopper Jena Weinstock said.
I think we have top shopping, from designer-level to economical, shopper Patti Carlton said.
