HOUSTON Firefighters from Village Creek and the Houston Fire Department battled a raging early morning blaze at a home in the exclusive Hunters Creek community about 3:30 a.m. Friday.

The couple who lived there said they had gone to bed shortly after midnight after returning from a hunting trip when they awakened to the smell of smoke. Homeowner Sylvia Ortega said she suspects the blaze started in the kitchen.

Neither she, her husband nor their 16-month-old daughter was injured.

Thank God, Ortega said.

Their home, located in the 10900 block of Memorial Drive, was completely destroyed in the fire.

The house was gone, Ortega said.

Ammunition could also be heard popping in the flames.

About 15 fire trucks from the Village Creek and Houston Fire Departments were on the scene. The Village Creek units were slightly delayed, because they were battling another house fire in the neighborhood when the alarm went out for the one on Memorial.

I ve never seen that happen in 25 years, said a Village Creek firefighter of the multiple blazes.

Investigators are trying to determine exactly what sparked the fire.
