PORTER, Texas Parents are questioning the hiring standards in Humble ISD after a teacher in the district was allegedly busted with hardcore drugs.
Monica Quintero, a 31-year-old 1st grade bilingual teacher at Ridge Creek Elementary School, was busted at her home where heroin, cash and weapons were found. The teacher and three men were all taken to jail.
Quintero s arrest left parents clutching their jaws in shock.
Not good, not good at all, one parent said.
Not only were parents taken aback by Quintero s appearance at the time of her arrest, but by the allegations surrounding her. Her arrest has left them wondering about the district s employment screening process.
Oh my Lord. That is crazy. How do they pick and choose their teachers? another parent asked.
Deputies went to Quintero s apartment in Porter because others in the complex reported smelling a suspicious odor. When deputies arrived, they allegedly found heroin, oxycontin, the date rape drug, cash and several stolen weapons. Quintero shared the home with her boyfriend, who was also arrested.
Still, some parents want to wait for the facts while trying to remain optimistic.
This is something that is not yet proved so we have to wait for the news or we have to wait for the proof, said Sory Mingo.
They (the students) lose a lot of respect when they see things like that happening, and today kids are so hot-headed already from the things they are exposed to so you just have to be that parent and keep them focused on the right things, Tess Jackson said.
Humble ISD placed Quintero on paid leave while authorities investigate. They said nothing came up during her routine background check and she had no criminal history on record when she was hired.
Quintero and the men she was arrested with were booked into the Montgomery County jail.
She was charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
