HOUSTON Houston Baseball fell 5-4 in a back-and-forth contest with Sam Houston State that saw the Cougars tie the game in the eighth, but surrender a late run in the ninth to drop its sixth one-run game of the year.
With the loss, Houston fell to 29-11, while Sam Houston State improved to 27-14. The two teams split the 2014 series and even back up the all-time record at 78-78.
Houston tied the game in the eighth on an RBI-double by senior Jacob Lueneburg, but Sam Houston State would take advantage of a leadoff hit-by-pitch and eventuallycome around to score on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.
The Cougars out hit the Bearkats, 10-9 as senior Casey Grayson led the charge with three hits in a 3-for-5 effort with one run and one RBI. Freshman Connor Hollis (2x4, R) scored a run and notched two hits, while sophomore Kyle Survance (2x4, 2 R, BB, 2 SB) added two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases.
Adding hits in the effort were sophomore Josh Vidales (1x3), sophomore Ashford Fulmer (1x4, RBI) and Lueneburg (1x1, RBI).
Houston pitching allowed seven free passes as four Bearkats were hit by pitches andthree drew walks.
Seven Cougars made an appearance on the bump, while Sam Houston State countered that with seven of its own.
Houston fell down 1-0 in the first following a one-out double, an error and an RBI-groundout. It didn t take the Cougars too long to respond as they plated two in the bottom of the third on three hits. Survance opened the frame with a leadoff single, stole second, while Vidales followed with a walk. Grayson then singled in Survance from second to tie the game. With two outs and Grayson at third after a Montemayor sacrifice bunt, Fulmer found the left side hole to put Houston up 2-1.
Sam Houston State tied the game in the sixth after a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles to make it a 2-2 game.
Houston was able to scratch across a run without a hit in the seventh after Survance and Vidales reached on consecutive walks. Survance used his speed to take third on a deep fly ball off the bat of Grayson before Montemayor was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. With one out and bases loaded, Pyeatt reached on fielder s choice, but was able to score Survance to put Houston up by a run.
Sam Houston State took advantage of two hits and three free passes in the eighth to take over the lead at 4-3. The Cougars fired back in the latter half of theinning to plate one and knot this game back up. Hollis got things rolling for Houston with a one-out double into right center. He then scored on a pinch-hit double by Lueneburg to send this game to the ninth all tied up.
The Bearkats would then use a leadoff hit batsman and an infield single followed by a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk, a shallow fly ball into left field scored the go-ahead run in the ninth for Sam Houston State as it took a 5-4 lead into the final half inning for the Cougars.
