HOUSTON -- After more than 30 years of being abandoned and empty, an historic Houston building is getting new life.

The Deluxe Theater was once a jewel in Fifth Ward, but fell into 40 years decay. However, there are plans to give the theater a makeover.

It holds a lot of memories for many people.

It was where I got my first kiss, said Rev. Harvey Clemmons Jr.

It was one of the few places where African Americans could watch movies in Houston from 1941 to 1969. It was open for a brief moment in the 70s as an art gallery.

Once you lose your history, you can t get it back, said Mayor Annise Parker.

The new and improved theater will open in October 2014 and there will be a partnership with Texas Southern University.
