AUSTIN, Texas -- As rain came pouring down, the news came pouring in: Austin will be home to the X Games for at least the next four years.
ESPN announced Wednesday that the popular extreme sports competition is moving from Los Angeles to the Circuit of the Americas in May of 2014.
It's another event to add to the rapidly growing list, but the first Austin X Games will also fall on the same weekend as UT s May Commencement.
According to Austin Hotel and Lodging Association President James Walsh, rooms will likely sell out fast.
Obviously there's a lot of demand with the size of the university; you know the university is one of Austin s largest employers.
Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau board member Gene McMenamin says during Formula One, 35,000 hotel rooms were booked.
His expectations for X Games?
In combination with graduation weekend, I think there will be a very strong demand for hotels.
Both events draw people from all over the country, even the world, so also expect bigger crowds at the airport.
A spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport tells KVUE they had a record 9.4 million travelers in 2012 and they're already on track to beat that record again.
On average, 35,000 people attend the XGames each of the four days.
To put that in perspective, ACL draws 75,000 people. The final day of F1 drew 117,000 people.
Austin's first X Games run May 15-18.
The University of Texas graduation is May 16-17.
