HOUSTON A 6-year-old boy suffered unimaginable torture at the hands of his own mother, suffering everything from being beaten in the head with tools to being forced to stand in a bed of insects, according to authorities.
The mother, 26-year-old Jessica Ann Mungia, was charged with four counts of felony injury to a child.
Harris County Sheriff s Office Special Victim s Unit/ Crimes Against Children investigators were called after the little boy showed up to LBJ Hospital with horrific bruises from head to toe.
Mungia took her son to the hospital on May 22 saying that his left arm was possibly broken. It was, and in addition to that, doctors found numerous bruises all over the boy s body that set off red flags.
The boy had bruises everywhere, including a healing burn wound on his left hand, lacerations on top of his scalp and a burn wound on his tongue. Child Protective Services were then called out to investigate, and the explanations for the bruises were shocking.
In regards to the scalp injury, the little boy said his mom hit him with a screwdriver. When asked about bruises to his chin and neck, the boy said his mother had grabbed and choked him, according to court documents. He also added that his mother would tie up his arms and legs and his dad would cover his mouth with a sock.
The boy had a linear mark on his right arm which he said was a result of his mom cutting him with a knife. He also said his mom would punish him by making him face the wall and would beat him with a cable.
Doctors also found blisters in the boy s mouth, which he explained came after his mom heated a spoon on the stove and put it on his tongue.
My mom got a hot spoon hot, hot, hot almost red, and she burned me, the boy said.
Injuries to his hand were said to happen after his mom placed his hand over the hot stove. The boy also had bruises from a belt buckle across his back, allegedly caused by his mother, as well.
The badly beaten child also told investigators that his mom made him stand in ants, causing him to be bitten many times.
When asked about his broken arm, the boy stated, my mom broke it, according to court documents. But she instructed him to lie about that and the other injuries. The boy said his mother told him to say his arm broke when he fell off a table and the other bruises came when he was crawling around and playing on the floor, but doctors suspected that was not entirely true.
Doctors confirmed that the injuries were all consistent with what the boy said really happened and further noted that there was a consistent pattern of physical abuse.
The boy told doctors that his mother scared him. In fact, he said she once slapped him so hard that he fell to the floor, all because he went to get a drink of water.
Authorities moved forward with filing charges against Mungia. She was placed under arrest and given a $60,000 bond.
Mungia was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2007.
CPS now has legal custody of Mungia's children. In addition to her son, she had two daughters, ages 2 and 9-months-old. The children were removed from the home after the boy was injured and are being cared for by family friends.
CPS said they have been to the home once in 2011, but no abuse was found at that time.
