WILLIS, Texas A woman was killed and two people were injured when their truck sped off a roadway and hit a tree in Willis, troopers said.

It happened around 10:45 p.m. Sunday on Long Street Road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said it appeared the driver of a 1997 Dodge Dakota failed to stay on the road at a 90-degree turn, causing him to strike a tree.

A medical helicopter was called in to transport the driver, identified as Robert Kendall, to the hospital in critical condition.

A female passenger, identified as 48-year-old Sheryl Gross, died at the scene. Another passenger, 36-year-old Ronald Murray, suffered minor injuries and was sent to the hospital by ambulance.

DPS said alcohol was found in the truck, but officers said they weren t sure if that had anything to do with the crash.

Montgomery County s Vehicular Crimes Unit assisted in the investigation.
