PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. As thousands of Louisiana residents evacuated ahead of Hurricane Isaac, Texas City resident Jay Carnes ventured into the teeth of the storm. The longtime weather fan continued a 30-year hobby of chasing hurricanes and found himself surrounded by floodwaters just outside of New Orleans on Wednesday.

Yeah, I screwed up, said Carnes, owner of Carnes Funeral Home. I went past a levee as it was topped and figured I could get back toward New Orleans. By the time I got back, water was 8 feet deep.

So it looks as if I am stuck in Plaquemines Parish for the next few days.

Carnes, 45, said he s seen plenty of flooded homes, dead animals and lots of submerged cars.

In one case, he saw a man wading through deep water carrying all that he could. Carnes offered him a ride to high ground.
