HOUSTON After hearing plenty of concerns from parents and principals, the Houston Independent School District has canceled plans to change school schedules. Superintendent Terry Grier made the announcement Thursday morning.

Earlier this year, HISD asked the community for feedback on a plan to implement a uniform bell schedule that would have added 19 minutes to the average school day and save $1.2 million.

HISD recently conducted a survey and 11 town hall meetings on the topic. The idea was supposed to save the district more than a million dollars in costs.

The transportation department, which was recently recognized as one of the top school transportation systems in the nation, will continue exploring more ways to increase efficiency.

This is the second year in a row that HISD has been forced to scratch the idea.
