HOUSTON-School districts across the Houston area are officially on summer break, and parents are scrambling to find activities for their kids. If you're not careful, the cost of kid entertainment can really add up. That's where Saving Cents comes in.
On Tuesday, June 9, there will be several events in the Houston area that are just right for kids - at the right price!
At 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aladdin will be performed at the Miller Outdoor Theater. Admission is free, and the play will be performed in both English and Spanish. What's more, you can bring your own refreshments!
At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the family can head to The Centrum in Spring for the Houston Symphony's "Sounds Like Fun" concert. Admission is free, and if you get there early enough, you can catch the instrument petting zoo.
One Houston mom is so into finding fun, free things to do in Houston that she started a blog, called Houston on the Cheap (Houstononthecheap.com).
"I look for free meals, discounts, half-price tickets, just things that can stretch a family's dollar which is important in this economy," said Vicki Powers. "Houston just has great venues that offer that for Houstonians and many times people don't realize that they exist."
On her blog, Powers suggested families head out to Value Day at the Sam Houston Race Park. Every Saturday is Value Day, actually, and a family of four can eat and watch live racing events for just $19.
The Fun 4-Pack includes four general admission tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and two racing programs - a $48 value - for just $19.
Powers also suggested a cool movie theater as a fun break from the Houston heat.
Some local theaters are offering kids movies on weekday mornings for $1, and some even offer free admission.
It's all a part of their summer movie camps.
The AMC Summer Movie Camp features $1 kid flicks each Wednesday at 10 a.m., from June 17 to August 5.
Kids can grab a combo pack for just $3 there, which includes a drink, popcorn and a snack along with their ticket.
Studio Movie Grill is offering its 2009 Summer Children's Series Monday through Thursday at 11 a.m., beginning June 8.
Their prices are $1 for kids and $2 for adults.
Rave Motion Pictures is hosting a Free Family Film Festival every Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 a.m., beginning June 9.
Silverado 19 IMAX will start running its five-week free family movies series on June 15. The free flicks will be shown Monday through Thursday at 11 a.m.
Whether you're outdoors or indoors, there are plenty of ways to keep the kids occupied this summer without breaking the bank.
