HOUSTON Hall of Fame pitcher and former Houston Astros star Nolan Ryan has agreed to re-join the club as the team s Executive Advisor.

In an interview with KHOU 11 Sports, Ryan had nothing but great things to say about the direction of the team.

From a timing standpoint, I m not sure this could be better, Ryan said about joining the team. I m going to be able to be involved with an organization that has a bright future so I think that s exciting.

In 2008, Ryan was hired as president of the Texas Rangers, eventually becoming CEO in 2011. He stepped down from that position in 2013 and says this position with the Astros will be a little different than what he did in Arlington.

I m not going to be tied down like I was with the Rangers, Ryan said. I ll have more flexibility and that s very attractive to me.

Ryan pitched for the Astros from 1980-1988. His son Reid Ryan is the Astros team president and the chance to work alongside him was another point that caught the Hall of Famer s attention.

To be able to help him will be a lot of fun, Ryan said. To be around him and the organization will be a very neat experience.

Ryan said that he has always been a fan of the Astros and his time spent playing for the team back in the 1980 s was a great experience. He felt that the team and it s current ownership genuinely wanted him back which ultimately was what sealed the deal for his return.

After talking with Jim, Jeff and Reid, I really felt like they all wanted me and felt like I could contribute to what they re doing over there so that excited me, Ryan said. I m going to work in all aspects of the organization so really I m going to be available to work on whatever they feel like I can be an asset to them so that really interests me at this point and time in my life.

The clubs is no expected to make the announcement at a press conference. Ryan says he hopes to make a trip down to Kissimmee and the clubs Spring Training camp in the next month.
