HOUSTON - Police say a man driving at a high rate of speed was killed and his passenger was seriously injured when their vehicle hit a utility pole in north Houston overnight.

The crash happened around midnight Tuesday on Gulf Bank Road near Bauman Road, according to officers with the Houston Police Department.

A Chrysler PTCruiser traveling eastbound lost control and struck the curb. The driver over compensated and skidded across the road, slamming into a utility pole. The impact was so great it split the pole in half.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a woman, was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.

There were no witnesses to the crash.
