HOUSTON - The Houston Fire Department said passing citizens alerted squatters when a house near downtown caught fire early Wednesday.

The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Gray Street just south of downtown.

The fire department said heavy damage was reported to a two-story home, but the occupants all made it out safe after passersby woke them up.

The fire was declared under control about an hour later. No injuries were reported, according to HFD.

Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.

Investigators said the home had no electricity or utilities, and the fire may have been started as the people inside tried to stay warm.
