HARRIS COUNTY A Houston woman says she is feeling a pain she hoped she d never have to endure: the pain of a mother who s lost a child.
He was a man of God and he loved the Lord, said Patricia Cooper. He was not a gang banger. He was not a thug.
Starsky Cooper was shot and killed around 12:30 Thursday morning outside his Harris County apartment complex. His friends said the 28-year-old was gunned down while on his way home from a workout.
So far, investigators have no motive and just a vague description of potential suspects.
There were at least two black males seen running after the shooting, said detective Greg Pinkins of the Harris County Sheriff s Office. We don t know if they were involved in the shooting, or if they were running because of the shooting.
The victim attended the Community of Faith Church where he sang in the choir. He was also the recent author of a book encouraging young people to avoid gangs and violence.
The cause is close to heart of the victim s pastor, who hosted a Stop the Violence gathering at his church hours before the murder.
Enough is enough, said Bishop James Dixon. We cannot continue to have more funerals. We cannot continue to put more and more people in jail and in prison.
Cooper had hoped to help rid the streets of violence one day. His mom thinks it s a shame that he fell victim to the very thing he was trying to prevent.
Because we have to stop the violence, she said. We have to stop the violence.
