HOUSTON The Houston Texans hit the practice field Monday for their first OTA of the off-season as they begin preparation for the 2013 season.

The Texans will hold 10 practices over the next few weeks at the Methodist Training Center as the team works to build off of making the playoffs for the second straight season.

Coaches have already gotten a glimpse of the Texans rookie class during their rookie mini-camp earlier this month. However, everybody will be watching to how first-round draft pick, DeAndre Hopkins, looks opposite Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson. Hopkins was drafted with the hopes of finding another playmaker for quarterback Matt Schaub and to take some of the load off Johnson.

Safety Ed Reed, who signed as a free agent from Baltimore, will not participate in the practices as he recovers from off-season hip surgery. Reed s absence will allow coaches to get a good look at second-round draft pick D.J. Swearinger at safety with plenty of reps.

Coaches hope Reed will be ready for training camp in July.

The Texans will also be sorting out their linebacker corps after Connor Barwin left for Philadelphia and Brian Cushing is coming off a season-ending knee injury. Coaches will also have to figure out how their rookies fit into the line-up and rotation.
