HOUSTON A Liberty County woman who fought tooth and nail to fend off an attempted rapist is speaking out about her ordeal. Leslie Garrett is one victim who will not hide.
Garrett, who is a letter carrier for the Liberty County Post Office, was preparing packages Friday night for a USPS food drive she helps to organize every year. She left a door to her house unlocked after letting her dog outside to use the bathroom then fell asleep. That mistake almost cost the woman her life.
Garrett woke up around 10:20 p.m. to find a partially-clothed man standing at the foot of her bed.
Police said Kyle Antoine, 27, had walked into her house and dropped his pants to his ankles.
I just started yelling at him Get out of my house. Get out. Get out. Garrett told The Vindicator.
The two immediately began to fight.
He covered me with my blanket. He was trying to choke me and smother me. The only thing I could ever hear him distinctly say was Just pass out. It will make it easier, she said, but she had no intention of going down without a fight.
I told him I won t pass out. I m not making anything easier for you. I just looked at my pictures of my kids and my grandkids on the wall, Garrett said.
The two fought for nearly an hour, before Antoine finally gave up and fled.
Garrett was left bloody and bruised, but alive. She was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for treatment.
Garrett did not want to remain silent about her attack and gave permission for the media to show what her attacker did to her. The Vindicator shared her attack photo with us.
Garrett was able to positively identify Antoine from a photo lineup and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was captured and booked into the Liberty County Jail.
Antoine was charged with burglary of habitation with intent to commit sexual assault. His bond was set at $100,000.
