HOUSTON A Houston woman tried to give a cover-up story that just did not add up after allegedly killing a 15-month-old boy she was babysitting, according to court documents.

Irma Perez, 30, was charged with felony murder in the death of Kevin Iraheta.

Perez, who had been the toddler s babysitter for only three months, picked up the boy from his mother on November 15, 2012 and took him to her house. The boy s mother said he was fine and in good health when Perez picked him up around 6 a.m., but while under her care that day, he sustained a massive brain injury and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Perez initially told doctors at Children s Memorial Hermann Hospital that the boy just threw up and stopped breathing, but later provided another statement and a videotaped walk-through describing how the boy fell off the kitchen counter, head-first, onto the linoleum. That explanation, however, did not match with the child s injuries, according to documents.

Doctors said the boy suffered subdural hemorrhaging, but they did not see any scalp or skull contusions or fractures, which would be consistent with a fall.

The toddler died from brain injuries the following day. An autopsy performed at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences listed his death a homicide. Doctors said the hemorrhaging of the brain, which caused his death, was the result of a rotational injury caused by either shaking or striking. Doctors said if the child had fallen off the counter and onto his head, there would have been visible bruising or external injuries to the head, none which were found.

Charges were not filed against Perez until January 29, 2014. She wasarrested at her home without incident andher bail was set at $50,000.
