HOUSTON The girlfriend of a man who was killed in a shootout with Houston police officers near downtown Houston early Monday says she was handing ammunition to her boyfriend.

Stephanie Ann Adams was charged with aggravated assault of a public servant. She revealed more details about the incident as she appeared in court Wednesday morning.

The chase started on the south side of town around 12:45 a.m. Monday.

Police said Adams was a passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend, who would not pull over for police. The boyfriend led police on a chase from I-45 at Monroe Road to Allen Parkway, firing shots at pursuing officers along the way.

HPD said the suspect lost control of his sedan on Allen Parkway near Stanford, and both he and Adams jumped out.

The suspect did stop the vehicle and fired multiple times at officers who were pursuing him, said HPD spokesman Victor Senties. The vehicle lost control and crashed here at 1900 block. A male and a female passenger immediately exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

The male suspect was shot and died at the scene after firing more rounds at the officers, police said. Adams was caught and taken into custody uninjured.

No officers were harmed in the incident, but HPD said one of the suspect s bullets struck a patrol car. Astraybullet flew into the second story window of a 4-year-old boy s bedroom at a homecaught in the crossfire.

Police believe the suspect may have been under the influence of a drug.
