HOUSTON -- Just days after the conviction of a Philadelphia abortion doctor, a Houston doctor is also accused of performing illegal abortions.
Late Wednesday, the Harris County District Attorney s office confirmed it is investigating allegations reportedly made by the doctor s former employees.
This may become another high-profile case with high-profile politicians and political groups already involved. The D.A. s office acknowledged the allegations are very similar on the surface to the case in Philadelphia.
Also on Wednesday, Dr. Kermit Gosnell learned he will spend the rest of his life in prison. On Monday, jurors convicted him of killing three babies after he delivered them alive in a filthy Pennsylvania clinic.
Things were done that shouldn t have been done. Justice has been served, said juror Joseph Carroll.
The controversial anti-abortion group Operation Rescue is accusing the Houston doctor of illegal late-term abortions. It has given a video it produced to prosecutors in Houston. The video contains interviews with three people said to be former employees of the doctor and it has given investigators images it says are of the abortions.
KHOU is not naming the doctor because he has not been charged. The doctor couldnot be reachedfor comment.
Meantime, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst demanded a full scale investigation with this statement:
In a week when serial murderer Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of killing babies, I read with disgust about the allegations of (a) Houston based abortionist ___ ___ performing illegal late term abortions surrounded by appalling sanitary conditions in his clinic.
The District Attorney s office said its investigation began recently and prior to the Lt. Governor s call for a probe.
Operation Rescue has an Abortion Whistleblowers Program which offers a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an abortionist breaking the law.
The group says that s how they were alerted to the Houston physician.
