HOUSTON -- Police were questioning a 30-year-old man Thursday in connection with the killing of a 64-year-old Vietnam veteran while he slept in West Houston.
Investigators said Charles Lambert was found with his throat slit under the overpass at Highway 6 and Park Row Boulevard.
We believe Charles was ambushed while he slept peacefully at night, said Sgt Brian Harris of the Houston Police Department. He didn't any chance at all.
He was attacked near a popular spot for panhandling early Wednesday morning.
According to his sister, Lambert wasn't homeless but chose to sleep outside.
He was a good man, he wouldn't hurt anybody, said Geraldine Lambert-Harrell. He served in Vietnam twice. He has medals. He was one of the best people you could ever meet.
According to witnesses, Lambert had been arguing with a man named Chad.
Detectives said Chad Goodeaux sent a text message to someone bragging about slicing Lambert s throat.
Goodeaux was detained Thursday. According to HPD, muder charges were pending.
