HOUSTON An oil spill is making a big impact on fishermen whose livelihoods are made in the bay and the Gulf.

A barge carrying nearly a million gallons of oil collided with a ship in the Houston Ship Channel near Texas City Saturday afternoon. The spill happened in a crucial area to the seafood industry.

It's significant for fish, crabs and shrimp, not to mention the eggs and larvae that are produced there.

With the Port of Houston closed, fishermen can t take their boats out or bring in their daily catch.

If you are wondering about the safety of the fish in the Gulf, authorities say you shouldn't worry because the area where the spill is has been closed off.
