HOUSTON - Houston police said a young driver died after he hit a tree and wrapped his car around a light pole on Westpark Drive early Monday.
The accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. near Wilcrest Drive as the Houston area was under a dense fog advisory.
A small, dark green sedan was traveling westbound when it left the road at a high rate of speed and crashed, according to officers with the Houston Police Department. The man behind the wheel, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said while the crash occurred during foggy and wet conditions, speed was also a factor.
No other vehicles were involved. The driver's identity has not been released.
As of 8 a.m. traffic remained slow on Westpark in both directions while police investigated.
