HOUSTON The city of Houston is moving homeless people off the banks of Buffalo Bayou downtown behind the Spaghetti Warehouse as new construction heads to the area.
The construction and improvements include plans for a new park at Allen s Landing and the renovation of the old Coffee Building.
The move will displace the 50 or so people who seek refuge under the bridge on a regular basis.
Rick Garrett says he s been sleeping under the bridge since 2012.
It s free. You re in the open. You ain t got no rules. You ain t got no curfew, he said.
Marilyn brown, with the Coalition for the Homeless says she encourages the people to go to shelters.
Some of them will choose to find another place outside to stay. It s just the reality, she said. These are people who ve been here on the streets for a very long time. What we call our chronic homeless.
