HOUSTON -- At the end of one line there is now a new one beginning. On Saturday, passengers can start taking METRORail s new Main Street line past the University of Houston s downtown campus.

Rides aboard all lines will be free for the day, as the project finishes ahead of schedule.

To celebrate, there will also be a big party for the public in Moody Park. It will feature food, music, and 80,000 pounds of snow.

We feel that we re trying to deliver the greatest present to Houston, which is a new rail line, said Gilbert Garcia, Metro Chairman. That s what we ve done.

Aside from the convenience, riders will find that the system has a new look. Several stops showcase the work of local artists, both on the platforms and on the walls.

In all, the new route adds more than five miles of rail to a system that currently has seven.

And the system is still expanding. In just a few months, two other METRORail lines will connect the city s east and southeast sides.

It will ultimately triple the size of a system that is already changing how Houstonians get around.
