SAN ANTONIO -- A Texas land commissioner is speaking out against a planned boxing promotion at Alamo Plaza that he says desecrates the Shrine of Texas Liberty.

This would not happen at Gettysburg, Jerry Patterson said in a press release. No one would even imagine holding such an event at the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor. Alamo Plaza is where Bowie and Travis fell. It should be treated as the hallowed ground that it is.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and junior middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez are expected at Alamo Plaza on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Their fight is scheduled for Sept. 14.

Patterson went on to call out Mayor Julian Castro, who is scheduled to speak at the event, saying the mayor and the city need to change how they think about the Alamo.

Alamo Plaza no place to promote a Las Vegas title fight. Alamo Plaza is the Alamo, Patterson said. It is a battlefield where brave men died to secure our liberty and should be treated as such.

Patterson said addition Alamo Rangers will be at the event to protect the Alamo from the thousands of fight fans expected at the event.

The press release also mentions recent legislation to designate Alamo Plaza a special historic district. The designation, according to the release, would protect the Alamo from such promotional events.

Last month it was Kanye West, this month it s Vegas fight promoters, Patterson said. The Alamo is under a constant siege of people who just don't appreciate the significance of the site.
