HOUSTON Harris County s Mosquito Control Division says mosquitoes have invaded in far greater numbers than usual this year thanks to plenty of rainfall.

Experts predict their population will surge through the summer.

Traditionally, the first cases of mosquito-borne disease are found in June. So far this year, inspectors have not found any trace of West Nile disease in Harris or surrounding counties.

Aside from using repellant, there are some other things people can do to avoid the bugs.

They re attracted to certain colognes and perfumes. The colors of the clothes, especially the darker colors, said Dr. Rudy Bueno of the Harris County Mosquito Control Division.

Dr. Bueno says there are more than 55 different types of mosquito species found in our area. The ones that carry West Nile are nocturnal, he says.
