FREEPORT, Texas Three people were rescued after being trapped in a burning apartment building in Freeport. The fire destroyed the 16-unit building, 14 of which were occupied.

Police officers and six fire departments responded to help fight the blaze. Officers formed a human ladder to rescue a 64-year-old and her two young grandchildren trapped inside.

Firefighters say the fire started on a front porch shortly after noon. Residents think that the fire could have been started by kids playing with a lighter. The flames quickly spread to the rest of the Azalea Court apartments, located at 902 N Avenue J.

The age of the building and the high temperatures contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Crews also had to be careful to prevent heat exhaustion.

The residents are thankful to have made it out alive but most have lost all of their belongings. Red Cross is expected to help the dozen who are displaced.
