HOUSTON Former Houston Astro Craig Biggio fell just shy of being elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He received 74.8 percent of the vote but needed 75 percent.

Biggio received 427 votes, matching Nellie Fox in 1985 and Pie Traynor in 1947 for the smallest margin to just miss.

Obviously, I m disappointed to come that close. I feel for my family, the organization and the fans. Hopefully, next year, Biggio said in a written statement.

Biggio congratulated 2014 Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas on their election to the Hall.

Astros President Reid Ryan said they share the fans disappointment over the voting results.

The Astros and our fans know that Craig deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and it is good to know that 74.8% of the Baseball Writers agree, Ryan said. We re hopeful it will happen in 2015.

In his 20 Major League seasons (1988-2007), all in an Astros uniform, Biggio was one of the top players of his era, excelling at catcher, second base and in the outfield.

The seven-time All-Star played a vital role in the most successful run in franchise history, which included six postseason appearances and a National League pennant.

Biggio is one of 28 players in ML history to reach 3,000 hits. His 3,060 hits ranks 21st in Major League history and 11th among right-handed hitters.

Biggio is also one of just 14 players in ML history to reach both 3,000 hits and 1,000 extra-base hits.

Former Astros teammate Jeff Bagwell also failed to make the Hall of Fame with 54.3 percent of the vote.

Maddux, Glavine and Thomas will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 27 along with managers Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa, elected last month by the expansion-era committee.

Writers had not elected three players in one vote since Nolan Ryan, George Brett and Robin Yount in 1999.

Controversy over how to evaluate stars tainted by the steroids era continued to impact the vote totals of players with stellar statistics. In their second appearances on the ballot, Roger Clemens dropped from 37.6 percent to 35.4, Barry Bonds from 36.2 to 34.7 and Sammy Sosa from 12.5 to 7.2.

Appearing for the eighth time, Mark McGwire fell from 16.9 to 11.0. Rafael Palmeiro will be dropped from future ballots after falling to 25 votes and 4.4 percent - below the 5 percent threshold necessary to remain eligible for next year s vote. announced Miami Herald columnist Dan Le Batard had turned his ballot over to the website, which allowed readers to vote on how it should be cast.

I hate all the moralizing we do in sports in general, but I especially hate the hypocrisy in this, Le Batard said in remarks posted by Deadspin. I always like a little anarchy inside the cathedral we ve made of sports.

BBWAA Secretary-Treasurer Jack O Connell declined comment.
