HOUSTON -- A driver was unable to avoid a man who ran into a busy roadway in north Houston late Thursday, police said.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Rankin Road near the North Freeway.

Witnesses told police that the man tried to cross Rankin against a red light. Some cars swerved to miss the pedestrian, but the driver of a BMW hit the man.

The pedestrian was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in serious condition but was expected to live.

The driver stopped and spoke with police. No charges were filed.
