HOUSTON Houston native Jennifer Holiday, the original Dreamgirl, is back home to star in The Color Purple.

Holiday won a Tony Award and a Grammy for her performance in Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls was 32 years ago, said Holiday. A lot of people don t believe it.

The 53-year-old has gone back to her Broadway roots and is starring in a production of The Color Purple.

She plays the part made famous by Oprah Winfrey in the movie.

I chose Sofia because she s so feisty, and she s got the spirit of the fight and respect, said Holiday. And she s also quite funny.

Holiday just released her first album in two decades. Over those 20 years she suffered from depression, multiple sclerosis and temporary blindness. She even attempted suicide.

God loved me in spite of me not loving myself, said Holiday. People sought to rescue me even though I did not really make a plea to be rescued.

Now she is being discovered by a new generation.

The Color Purple started Friday at the Hobby Center and runs through the weekend. Click here for ticket information.
