HARRIS COUNTY, Texas A member of the Northeast Trail Ride died after suffering a heart attack while on the trail Thursday morning, fellow members said.

Robert D. Joe, 79, was transported by ambulance to LBJ Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Trail members said Joe was one of the Northeast Trail Ride s cofounders back in 1982.

Everybody knew him, you can ask anybody in northeast Houston, everybody knew RD Joe, said trail rider Barbara Williams. It s been real rough out here.

But the trail ride continued. Trail boss Anthony Bruno said it s what RD would have wanted.

He died doing what he loved to do and that s what I told his kids, he said.

I texted his son and I asked him if I could drive his dad s wagon in honor of his family because I know they don t want to do that, and I ll do it for you all, said Bruno, choking back tears.

RD s boots were hung on his wagon in tribute. He lived and breathed this trail ride. Friends said he loved to laugh and made the best sweet potato pies. And at 79-years-old he didn t want to stop riding.

I quit, but he was still left, so you know he must have loved it, said Joe Bruno, former trail boss for the Northeastern Trail Ride.

And now even in death, he s not done riding yet.

I m just going hang his boots on his saddle, said Bruno. Let him be there in spirit and let him ride.

RD s family is shocked by his loss. His wife Marie is asking for your prayers and would like to thank the public for their support.
