HOUSTON The chief of the METRO Police Department will be suspended for a day for causing a traffic accident in southeast Houston on October 27.

The METRO Safety Department reviewed the car accident involving Chief Victor Rodriguez and concluded it was preventable. The chief, who was off duty that day, did not yield right of way to an oncoming vehicle in the 11700 block of Bogey Way at Scarsdale.

The driver in the car struck by the chief was injured when the airbag deployed.

The chief will be suspended without pay on November 18 and will also be required to take a defensive driving course.

We have rules and guidelines by which we all must abide. I expect to be held accountable and I fully accept the disciplinary action resulting from this accident. I look forward to taking defensive driving to enhance my driving skills, Chief Rodriguez said.
