HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Texas corrections officials say an inmate who four years ago was on the run for a week after escaping during a prison transfer has died, apparently of natural causes.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says 53-year-old Arcade Comeaux was at the Clements Unit in Amarillo when he told officers Tuesday he was experiencing shortness of breath. He lost consciousness and couldn t be revived. Clark says an autopsy will be conducted but foul play isn t suspected.

Several corrections officers were fired or retired after the convicted sex offender, believed disabled, pulled out a smuggled pistol, fired it and fled on foot while in a van en route from Huntsville to Beaumont in 2009. He disarmed and handcuffed two officers.

Comeaux was captured a week later in Houston.
